According to Sephardic tradition, the giving of Torah went on for a long time and the Israelites fell asleep at Mt. Sinai. Ever since, some communities have conducted an all-nighter, studying and discussing Torah and the Book of Ruth, which is read on this festival. We are not going to stay up all night, but we are going to watch and discuss a movie that has been exciting audiences at Jewish Film Festivals all year long!

The Women’s Balcony tells the story of an accident during a bar mitzvah celebration. It leads to a gender rift in a devout Orthodox community in Jerusalem, in this rousing, good-hearted tale about women speaking truth to patriarchal power.
