8:15 p.m. Dr. Ellen Umansky
Dr. Ellen Umansky is our guide on a journey through time as we examine the impact of a short note on our world today. In 1917, Lord Balfour, the British Foreign Secretary sent a note to Lord Walter Rothschild, a leader of the British Jewish community. It would only take him three tweets to send it today. It began: “His Majesty’s government view with favour the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people…” Dr. Ellen Umansky is a professor and the director of the Carl and Dorothy Bennett Center for Judaic
Studies at Fairfield University. Her research and writing largely focuses on late 19th-20th century Jewish history and thought in the United States and England, with a particular interest in lay religious leadership, liberal Judaism, and Jewish women’s spirituality. Please reserve your place for dinner no later than Tuesday, October 24, by contacting Chris Rocha in the Temple office at 203-336-1858 or Chris@cbibpt.org.
