From Baghdad to Brooklyn – A One Woman Show

Join us for a tour de force performance. Some of our members saw this show off-Broadway in November and thought it one of the most entertaining and enlightening shows they had seen in a long time.

Join us for an amazing journey through time and space! Actress Michelle Azar brings us an hour-long performance of stories and song, in Hebrew, Yiddish, English and some Arabic. In her own words:  The story tells my journey as the Sephardic/Ashkenazi “mutt” that I am. Jews have developed a sense of protectiveness over ourselves that was born of necessity, but may be holding us back now in the pursuit of peace. My show, From Baghdad To Brooklyn, tells stories as my father, dealing with the Farhoud in Iraq and the independence of Israel, my grandmother as a child being forced from Poland alone into a new life in Brooklyn, and how their fears and strengths live in me now. There is a great deal of humor, as I portray my mother singing her own one-woman show and my days as a Habonim camper, and a great deal of pathos as well as I travel my audience through the Israeli wars, fearful immigration officers, and more.

This show is appropriate for adults of all ages as well as children in 5th grade and older. RSVP to Lynn in the temple office by Friday, March 2. Tickets are a $10.00 tzedakah donation payable in advance or at the door and all proceeds go to the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, providing relief and helping others on their journeys – all around the world. Co-sponsored by Congregation Beth El and the Federation for Jewish Philanthropy of Upper Fairfield County.
