CONECT – Book Discussion: The New Jim Crow

April 21, 2018 - 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm

B’nai Israel is discussing Michelle Alexander’s book The New Jim Crow in the fourth and final installment of its “Two Books, Two Movies: Discussions on Racism in America,” co-hosted by CONECT. We will meet from 4:00-6:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 21st at B’nai Israel with havdalah and refreshments included.

Alexander’s book examines the ways in which racism may have contributed to America’s system of mass incarceration and how, in particular, the loss of many freedoms experienced by post-incarcerated individuals has created de facto segregation in this country. If you do not have time to read the whole book, you can get a good overview from the foreword and introduction. (Copies of the book are available for loan in the temple library as well as in local public libraries and can be purchased at Barnes and Noble, on Kindle, etc.)

We will also be discussing possible follow-up learning, action, and service opportunities for B’nai Israel as an outgrowth of this series.

In addition, CONECT is hosting a regional “plenary” session for the Fairfield and New Haven county congregations who participated in the Two Books, Two Movies initiative at Temple Israel in Westport on Thursday, April 19 from 7:00-9:00 p.m. All are welcome to attend.
