Community Outreach

High Holy Day Food Drive

Every year during the High Holy Days, our BIFTY teenagers organize a large-scale congregational food drive. Bags are distributed by our high school congregants at Rosh Hashanah and then collected at Yom Kippur. We donate all of the food that we collect to Operation Hope and the Salem Lutheran Food Pantry. Last year we donated over 7,000 tons of food.

Monthly meatloaf at St. John’s Church and Operation Hope

Volunteers are needed for a monthly dinner for 50, the first Monday of the month, for Operation Hope. This is not a regular commitment, and can be shared with several people, with cooking done from home. If interested, please contact Debbie Goodman at deborah.goodman7@gmail.com

Norma Pfriem Urban Outreach Initiative

B’nai Israel volunteers work with the NPUOI at the Calvary St. George’s Episcopal Church’s Fellowship Hall located at 755 Clinton Ave at Beechwood Avenue, in many ways. On Thursday afternoons, the Feel the Warmth suppers are wonderful ways to get involved. Volunteers assist from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. prior to the supper and from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. to serve food and assist with clean-up. To learn more about volunteering, please email info@uccbridgeport.org or Bob Sussman at summerbreeze50@msn.com.

We also help to distribute food to local Bridgpeort residence in their food pantry several Wednesday afternoons from 4:30-6:15 p.m. throughout the year. For more information about this program, contact Judy Blumenthal at ctblumers@optonline.net.

CT Food Bank

Volunteers throughout the year go to the Connecticut Food Bank at the Fairfield Warehouse, 74 Linwood Avenue, Fairfield to participate in the Kids Backpack Program. We fill bags of “weekend food” for kids in need and for whom many it is their only source of nutrition. This takes place on Wednesday afternoons throughout the year, from 5:30-7:00 p.m. For more information about this, contact Judy Blumenthal at ctblumers@optonline.net.
