The American Ballet Theatre National Dance Curriculum Guidelines for Dancers outline the role of the teacher for preschool children as:
“The dance teacher’s main task is to make class fun and keep things simple. Encourage children to explore new ways to move their bodies. Be sure to share in the fun, keeping in mind that the primary reason children participate in dance is to enjoy themselves, improve skills and be with friends.”
Part of each class is dedicated to creative movement and song; their favorite may be the “Princess Song” or “The Butterfly Dance.” Every pre-ballet/tap and ballet/tap program uses singing and movement as a device to enhance interaction between dancers, music, voice and movement, in addition to it being fun and something special and consistent that is part of their experience.
